TECA Receives Important SSAE 16 Certification

TECA Data Safe is proud to have recently received one of the industry’s most important certifications—Statement of Standards for Attestation and Engagement, otherwise known as SSAE 16. TECA co-founder and CEO/President, Tom Fischer, answers questions about SSAE 16 and why it is so critical to TECA’s customers.

  • What is SSAE 16 Certification and how did TECA become certified?
  • Statement of Standards for Attestation and Engagement, or SSAE 16, assures customers that TECA adheres to best practices and procedures for security, employment, access, and controls. It is the authoritative guide for reporting on service organizations.
Through means of an extensive and meticulous auditing process, an outside, independent auditor inspected TECA to ensure we met the SSAE 16 certification criteria in the areas of security, access control policy, back up policies, change management, monitoring, hiring practices and procedures, background checks, IT monitoring, risk assessment, vulnerability assessment, password policy and more. Additionally, they reviewed our employee handbook, employment contracts, and service contracts. Finally, they visited our company headquarters and both our data centers in Fremont, CA and Minneapolis, MN.
  • How is the outside, independent agency qualified to audit TECA for SSAE 16 certification?
  • The audit specialists carry professional certifications which can include Certified Public Accountant, Certified Information Systems Auditor, Certified Information Systems Security Professional, or Certified Internal Auditor. Additionally, each audit specialist is thoroughly trained in Project Management methodology, which is critical to providing the most efficient audit possible.
  • Why is it so important for a data center to be certified?
  • Because of Sarbanes-Oxley legislation, SOC audits have become a must-have for both public and private companies that provide outsourced data services. The reason for this is simple—in order to comply with very stringent Sarbanes-Oxley requirements on their end, our customers need independent validation from a CPA firm that our internal processes and controls are sound and working as intended. SSAE 16 Certification is a significant accomplishment and is an indication of excellent consistency within our control environments.
  • How does SSAE 16 Certification benefit TECA’s customers?
  • SSAE 16 Certification provides our customers with valuable information about our organization’s controls and their effectiveness. This gives our customers accredited and reliable information about our organization, and our ability to satisfy their requirements effectively as they relate to security, employment, access, and controls. In essence, it gives them the assurance and peace of mind to know that we are a reputable and trustworthy organization with which to do business.

  1. The term “malware” is short for “malicious software.”
  2. Macs cannot be infected by malware.
  3. If your computer is attacked, reinstalling your data from a backup will take care of the problem.
  4. If my system is attacked, I should just dump my computer in the garbage and buy a new one. There’s no fixing it!
